Most Important Reasons of Flight Delays

Most Important Reasons of Flight Delays

Article by Shawn Parker

Flight status refers to the real-time information about a particular flight. It usually tells the likely arrival and departure times of the flight and whether the flight is cancelled or not.

Flight status information is commonly sought by the people in order to plan their arrival and departure to and from the airport respectively in a better way. While it is common for the flights to be on time, there could also be delays due to a number of reasons. Some of the main reasons for delays have been discussed below:

1.Weather: Perhaps the most important and common reason for delay in flights is weather. Weather conditions prevailing at the origin and the destination airport and also encountered during in-flight play a major role in altering the flight status from the one mentioned in the air tickets. Weather-related information provided by the Meteorological departments helps in the advance planning of operations by the airline. However, sudden changes in the weather could lead to unscheduled delays or even cancellations.

2.Traffic: Growing aviation requires a proportionate investment in infrastructure such as airports. If infrastructure development does not keep pace with the growing requirements of civil aviation, then there are bound to be jams at the airports. At a more micro level, the inappropriate and inefficient ground operations at airports may result in delays in turnaround times of airplanes. This affects incoming flights that have to wait for longer time to get the nod for landing and, till the time these are allowed, airplanes keep hovering over the airport. Therefore, increasing airplanes traffic at a particular airport results in delays.

3.Engineering Problems: Airplanes might also develop some kind of fault in their many equipments and systems which might need fixing prior to being flown or, if the snags develop in-flight, then there might be a need to land at the nearest airport. This is yet another important reason for the delays in flights.

4.Security concerns: Security related concerns are also important reasons for delays in flights. Any event which is a likely security hazard to aircraft or passengers could mean not only delays in flight take-off but also in the immediate landing of airplane at the nearest airport, resulting in delays. So, even a hoax call, a misbehaving passenger or any such event could lead to delays.

So, the delays can happen due to both the on-ground as well as the in-flight reasons. These could be due to natural causes on which there might not be any control or due to the non-natural (mainly man-made) reasons which can be corrected but require time for same. Knowing flight status in advance helps in planning your movements to the airport better, whether for catching the flight or for receiving others.
